Haynes 5 & 6 Repowering Project - Long Beach, Calif.

Haynes Generating Station is a natural gas and steam power plant located in the city of Long Beach, California. It was built in the mid-1960s and currently has seven generating units for a combined capacity of 1,600 megawatts (MW).

Haynes Units 5 and 6 were replaced with six, 100 MW advanced technology gas turbines, providing fast-start capability (up to full load in 10 minutes). Another major aspect of the project was the installation of dry cooling gas compressors, electrical transformers, and switching equipment, removing the need for the current ocean water cooling system for those units.

MEC managed crews on the installation of conduit, wire, and equipment associated with the temporary power for the entire project site. The work included approximately 5,000 linear feet (LF) of duct bank, 5kV and 600V wire installation, and the mounting of four large transformers as well as 6 distribution panels.

The project provided the city of Los Angeles with fuel-efficient units, reduced greenhouse gas, and NOx emissions, and lowered fuel costs.
