WMATA Rehab Red Line - Washington, D.C.

This project involves the rehabilitation of the District of Columbia’s oldest transit corridor using multiple procurement methods. This best value fixed price project includes design-build bid items, bid-build bid items, and the remainder is JOC (Job Order Contracting) work. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Redline Project covers 6-miles of 3rd rail powered double track in a tunnel and on elevated guide-way. MEC’s scope of work includes:

  • Preparation of 74 individual design packages
  • Replace equipment in 20 existing traction power substations and tie breaker stations
  • Replace AC switchboard equipment in 5 passenger stations
  • Replacement of UPS at 6 passenger stations
  • Replacement/Installation of 1450 communication devices (CCTV and PA) at 12 passenger stations
  • Replacement/Rehabilitation of 64 escalator/elevators
  • Replacement/Installation of 158 wayside ETS boxes
  • Replacement /Installation of 330 ATC racks in train control rooms (TCR)
  • Replacement/Installation of 58 wayside signals
  • Replacement of 10,000 track fasteners
  • 144,000 SF of structural platform repairs and pavers

Other elements of work include ceiling tile replacement, canopy skylight work, information kiosks, and ventilation and air conditioning systems replacement.

MEC must maintain temporary service for traction power and train control including extensive cutover planning to assure no disruption to revenue service. Track access restrictions and limited work hours for many operations make this a very challenging project.
