WMATA Replacement of Traction Power Equipment - Washington, D.C.

This design-build project included the replacement of traction power equipment in thirty-three existing substations and building a training simulator at WMATA’s Telegraph Road facility. MEC’s scope of work in each substation included the installation of new:

  • DC and AC panels
  • Annunciators
  • insulated “Amazite” floor where required
  • Isolation transformers

Work also included:

  • High and medium voltage terminations and testing
  • Rigging of all new equipment into the substations
  • Replacement of the UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) and batteries in six of the substations
  • Testing and commissioning of all new switchgear.
  • Installation of all control cable

WMATA required a minimum number of switchgear cubicles remain online at all times. Temporary cathode breakers were required in some substations to facilitate the safe removal and replacement of existing switchgear.
