Wilmington-Gramercy 138kv Underground Transmission Line Upgrade
Los Angeles, California
This five-month, fast-tracked transmission line upgrade had to be completed in time to serve the large electrical demand of the summer months in Southern California. The project consisted of removing and replacing 1.3 miles of two parallel low-pressure oil-filled (LPOF) circuits with new 1500-kcmil cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable. To minimize disruptions to end users, one circuit remained energized while the other was replaced and put back into service. Major operations included:
- Demolition of equipment in 24 existing manholes
- Removal and replacement of 55,000 linear feet of cable
- Installation of 42 XLPE 138kV joints
- Twelve separate terminations
- Testing and commissioning
