Alamitos Energy Center
Long Beach, California
Led by MEC affiliate Kiewit Power Constructors Co., this EPC project replaced an existing power plant with a 650-MW, 2×1 combined-cycle natural gas facility. The new high-efficiency plant supplements renewable energy sources, meeting variable demands by offering both peak and intermediate capacities. A design with lower stacks helps the building blend into the surrounding area.
MEC was responsible for all electrical installation including more than 2 million feet of cable, 300,000 feet of raceway, and a 230kV four-breaker radial bus configuration substation. Working closely with the local union, MEC supplied more than 100 electricians at peak.
