WMATA Platforms Program
Washington, District of Columbia
The WMATA Platforms Program consisted of four back-to-back contracts to rehabilitate a combined total of 22 passenger stations, along with ancillary facilities such as traction power substations, tie breaker stations, pump stations and tunnel fan shafts.
The upgrades were substantial and intrusive with the goal of significant improvements to safety and customer experience. Mass. Electric Construction Co.’s scope of work included significant electrical upgrades to bring the system up to current standards, critical fire-rated systems, replacement of lighting with highly efficient systems, replacement of communication and security systems including PA, CCTV, access control, digital displays, fire alarm, intercom, network infrastructure, phones and more.
The majority of the work for this program took place during a series of six, 90-100 day shutdowns. Despite intense schedule and logistical challenges associated with the amount of work completed during these short shutdown windows, all stations were competed on or ahead of schedule.
