WMATA Yellow Line
Washington, District of Columbia
The WMATA Yellow Line between L’Enfant Plaza and the Pentagon includes an underground tunnel section and a bridge over the Potomac River. The underground portion includes two bored tunnels with steel and concrete lined sections. Kiewit was tasked with rehabilitating portions of the steel lined tunnel and the bridge structure. To facilitate structural rehabilitation efforts, the existing electrical and communications systems cables, equipment and appurtenances need to be removed from the steel liner.
After structural rehabilitation, Mass. Electric Construction Co. installed and tested permanent electrical cabling and devices to return WMATA’s system to revenue service. Systems replaced during this project included automatic train control, emergency trip stations, fire alarm, radio, fiber optics, lighting and low-voltage power.
